The Home Server Show #103

HomeServerShowLogoEpisode 103 is a little bit of news and a whole lot of Vail.  We only had 48 hours with the product but managed to talk for an hour about it!  We were live via uStream.tv (http://www.ustream.tv/channel/the-home-server-show) and also left a lot of Vail on the table to talk about next time.  Jump into the forums to give your feedback about Vail, your testing of it, and how you like or dislike it.

Worried about PC Security? 2 Things You Should Do Right Now! (and they are free!)

It seems like it comes in waves and this week has been one of those waves!

Since I often fix broken PCs for people, I see it all.  Lately, I have been getting that call that starts something like this.  “Jim, I have a message that my computer has found a virus and that I need to pay to update my Antivirus software.  Do I?”

In most cases, this is a solid, NO!  There is a breed of viruses called “Scareware” that try to separate you from you money by collecting $$$ for antivirus updates for some bogus software.  It all looks very legit, but it most definitely is not.  There is some additional info here if you want more details.

What you need to know right now, is that there are two very easy things you can do right now to help prevent this from happening.  Oh, and they are both very FREE!

For years we have been asking Microsoft to fix their security problems with a low or no cost solution that works for the average consumer.  They finally did it.

Saying “Good-bye” to the Palm Pre? One Year Later…

A year ago this month I was getting ready to move away from the MotoQ that I had been using for the previous 2 years on Verizon and was moving back to Sprint.  My only real option at the time was the newly release Palm Pre.  While at the time I compared it to the iPhone, there was never really an option of moving to that platform.  I’m a Sprint guy and needed to stay with Sprint (besides, I have a iPod Touch).  I know this kills some of you.

EVO is the first 4G phone offered by Sprint it has a 4.3" screen, Android OS and front face camera.Fast forward a year and it’s time to make that decision once again, except this time there is a new sheriff in town.   The only real smart phone option for guy like me is the new HTC EVO 4G.

The list of specifications are impressive:

  • 3G/4G capability
  • Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ QSD8650 (1GHz) processor
  • 4.3” capacitive display with pinch-to-zoom and tactile feedback
  • World-class HTML browser – bandwidth and quality that rival that of netbooks
  • Android 2.1, with access to more than 35,000 apps on Android Market (2.2 coming soon)
  • Simultaneous voice and data capability in 4G and Wi-Fi coverage areas, enabling Web surfing and more while talking
