Product Description

Colorful Running Companion with Connected Features

  • GPS running watch with high-resolution color display
  • Tracks distance, pace and heart rate¹
  • Identifies personal records
  • Connected features²: automatic uploads to Garmin Connect, live tracking, social media sharing
  • Compatible with free training plans from Garmin Connect

Just like a coach, Forerunner 220 provides the motivating feedback you need to guide your training. You can even get post-run encouragement from friends and fans, thanks to the 220’s connected features like real-time live tracking and social media sharing via the Garmin Connect Mobile app.

A Coach in Every Watch

Forerunner 220 measures essential running data including distance, pace and heart rate¹. It’s like having a coach on hand, providing constant feedback and recording all your stats so you can focus on your run. In addition to using GPS to calculate distance and pace, the 220 has a built-in accelerometer. So you know distance and pace data when you’re running on an indoor track or treadmill, with no need for a separate foot pod. The accelerometer can also track distance when GPS is unavailable, such as when you run through a tunnel. It’s compatible with free training plans from Garmin Connect, which you can schedule and send to your watch, for real-time coaching.

Easy to Use

The 220 has a color display, which makes it easy to interpret your data at a glance. It also features simple button operations and a sturdy, hinged wristband that’s comfortable for any size wrist.

Extra Training Features

You can set up alerts for heart rate, pace or run/walk intervals to help you stay in the desired range. The 220 features vibration alerts and audible alerts, and you can customize it to provide both or just one type of prompt. When your run’s done and saved in your watch’s history, a post-run summary appears so you can see how you did. The 220 also notices if you hit any personal records on that run, such as your fastest mile, 5k, 10k, half or full marathon, or your longest run to date.

Get Connected

Forerunner 220 automatically uploads your data to Garmin Connect even when you can't get to a computer. Get the free Garmin Connect Mobile app on your smartphone and then pair it with your watch. When you save your completed run, it will automatically upload to Garmin Connect when you’re in range of your phone.

It also features live tracking, which allows your friends and fans to follow along and see your stats in real time. You must have your phone paired with the 220 throughout your run to use LiveTrack. You can also share your victories through social media with the Garmin Connect Mobile app. And, for real-time coaching as you run, the 220 is compatible with free training plans at Garmin Connect. By regularly connecting your watch to Garmin Connect, you'll also benefit from a faster GPS fix due to satellite data that will be sent to your device automatically.

Perfect upgrade!
5 out of 5 stars
Perfect upgrade!
I had a forerunner 210 that died on me so I sought a replacement that would be a step up. The 220 it's my choice and I'm extremely satisfied with my choice. It does everything the description says, and as others have said, it's crazy quick when getting a SAT signal, a welcome change from the 210 that would sometimes take upto 5 mins. You can set up 2 data screens to see during a run; three fields per and you can change them around to your desire... nice. Another nice upgrade, battery lasts longer, I ran 17 miles over a 5 day span and my charge was still over 50% before I recharged it; I also use it as a watch so I think the battery power is a definite plus. The Bluetooth allows you to upload to connect as soon as you're close to the linked smartphone, and if nike+ is your app, connect will link to connect. Overall, a good choice for the runner that just has to know how long they are along their run and later look at the route to make future route decisions.

This is a stellar product by a solid company. Garmin has been super helpful to me everytime I have contacted their customer service. They really value their customers and that's a rare thing in this day and age. I have had this watch for two and half years and it has worked without a hitch since the first time I put it on. I've logged over 1000 miles jogging with this watch. Rain, snow, summer heat you name it; if its a type of weather the planet Earth can experience, I've run in it with this watch.

Physically, it is lightweight and durable. The display is intuitive and minimalistic - you get the time, date and day of the week from the timepiece functions. A simple press of the upper left button grants you a backlight for a brief period of time. Garmin does not try to pack every bell and whistle you could imagine and pack into a watch. Its not going to answer your phone calls or text messages and its not going to browse the internet. I don't want a super computer on my wrist when I jog. I want a durable, accurate and consistent device to give me the information I need during my workouts and races. This watch delivers.

When GPS mode is activated it becomes a runner's best friend. It keeps track of your records for 5k, 10k et cetera and fastest mile times (on the watch and on the software). You just ran your fastest mile today? The watch will tell you. While running in GPS mode, it constantly updates you with your current pace at the bottom. This is very helpful when running competitively or tailoring your workouts for speed or stamina (Think HIIT). If you're running 9 minute miles and you want to up the pace you can get immediate feedback from the watch. This keeps you on point for your target time for races and workouts. Did you just run a mile of hilly terrain? This watch will record your elevation changes and let you know how much you did (Pretty cool when i'm doing HIIT on stairs or bleachers). The software that goes along with it could have its own review, but in a nutshell, it works well and does what its supposed to. It is designed to be a runner's watch and that's exactly what it excels at. The battery is good enough to handle a marathon and then some (from experience). Connection to the GPS satellites happens fairly quickly. I have also hiked at a slow pace for over 6 hours and the watch was able to GPS track the entire time and still had juice left afterwards.

I have owned previous generation watches from Garmin. One of my complaints with the earlier generation watches was the connection on the watch to the computer. Some of the older ones had a connection that was hard to get just right so you could sync it and charge it. That issue is completely resolved with this one. It connects easily on the first try every time. It does not take very long to charge and holds its charge very well even after almost 3 years of abuse. If you are not doing a lot of GPS logging with the watch it will hold its charge and function as a timepiece for well over a month before needing to be recharged. The previous watches i've owned also had some issues with memory. This one has over 1000 miles of running on it and memory is not even a problem.

Summary: If you want a watch that will meet your needs as a fashionable timepiece and also functions as solid piece of workout equipment, this is the watch for you. I've had many people ask me about this watch after seeing me wearing it during the last couple of years. They are always astounded how light it is and I always recommend one if they are a runner.

I am a runner who uses the Galloway method (run / walk) to run short distances as well as half and full marathons and trail races.

I have used my old Garmin 201 for a little over 10 years continuously, and I only broke down and ordered this watch as a replacement once my old 201 began having serious challenges receiving a charge (and actually, I suspect the old charging cradle is the real culprit there). The 201 served me so well that I just was not in the market for a new GPS running watch.

Wow - I can't believe how AWESOME this new Garmin 220 is! I personally love the aesthetics (I bought the red and black one). The LCD screen has options to have parts of the numbers displayed in colors which you can select - blue, red, orange, green, and purple, I think, are the options. It looks really cool! It also is *shaped* like a watch, rather than the old rectangular form factor of the 201, so wearing it out and about is a more realistic option.

But as to the performance - I was impressed here as well. My old 201 unit often took quite a while to locate the GPS satellites and perform the triangulation ... basically, it took a while to start up. The 220 model seems to acquire the GPS signals MUCH faster - a major improvement. It also has vibration as an option, which is great for when I am listening to music and may not have heard the run/walk beeping as easily. Vibration can be turned off if you wish.

The new Garmin also downloads run history effortlessly when I connect it via the USB charging cradle to my computer. It is so cool how seamless that works ... it can upload directly to your online Garmin account and shows you the route that you took while running, cycling, hiking, etc. So cool!

Finally, the most important part for me: run/walk. This watch has the usual features you're probably used to in a Garmin GPS watch, including intervals (which is how I did the run/walk on the old 201). You can still do the interval workouts on this watch, but you can also set the "main" workout function to default to run/walk. It even shows a little guy walking, or running, when it beeps/vibrates to tell you that it is time to do so. A nice small touch that makes me smile.

The watch also offers many features that I have not used. For example, via Bluetooth, you can pair the watch with a smartphone and use a Garmin app to do certain "smart watch" stuff like read text messages and see Caller ID (I think). You can also pair it with a "footpod" which can help the watch determine distance traveled even if you are inside a building, or to help calculate cadence. It can be paired with a heart rate monitor as well (one version of the watch comes with the HRM). Good stuff, even if I am not currently using it.

Battery life has been excellent so far, but I admit that it is still brand-new. My old 201 did have some loss of battery longevity (just a bit, really), but again I used it several times a week for over 10 years. Show me ANY battery (lithium included) that holds up that well!

Overall, I can't recommend this Garmin 220 GPS watch enough. It has all of the performance, aesthetics, and features that I expected and much more. If your needs and expectations are similar to mine, you will not be disappointed with this watch!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gran herramienta para corredores
Reviewed in Mexico on July 28, 2015
