July 17 at PM Finally a good Prime Day deal. SanDisk 1TB SSD $150: SanDisk SSD PLUS 1TB Solid State Drive – SDSSDA-1T00-G26 – Most are in the $180 to $225 range right now. Been thinking about getting a 1TB SSD to help with Burst plotting.  Just cannot justify it at the moment. Still want one really bad. ____________________________________________________________ There were actually some really good prime deals this year.  Makes me wish I had more money and paid more attention. ____________________________________________________________ Ryan Kerschner shared a link. July 16 at PM Best Buy has the 8TB Western Digital easystore external drives on sale this week for $149. This is as cheap as they go. These have WD Reds or whitelabel Reds inside, and are a great source of cheap NAS drives, of you are willing to do a little work to remove the drive from its housing. I have 6 of these in my setup, and am ready to buy more at this price. We might have missed this deal on Prime Day, but there are two deals right now on Amazon for 8TB Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8TB External Desktop Hard Drive Storage + 2mo Adobe CC Photography – Seagate Expansion 8TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB (STEB8000100) – Backblaze reliability report – —————————————————————————————————— Jim – Love the new things you are doing with the show! Here is my submission for your request regarding home storage from HGG 362. NAS Devices: Synology DS1618+ 6 x 8TB NAS drives (2 x Seagate IronWolf, 4 x WD Red), RAID 5, usable (65GB used) Newly acquired, going to be my primary NAS for multimedia and general file storage Asustor AS6202T 2 x 8TB NAS drives (WD Red), RAID 1, usable ( used) Originally intended to be replacement for Thecus M3800, probably going to be used in VM environment as an iSCSI target or off-site rsync target Thecus M3800 3 x 500GB desktop drives (WD Blue), RAID 5, 1TB usable (800GB used) First NAS, used as primary multimedia and general file storage device for nearly 10 years, soon to be retired QSAN XN5004T Empty, 1 x #8243; bay & 4 x #8243; bays Newly acquired, no plan for unit yet Cloud Storage: Amazon Drive 1TB plan Still being configured, will be used as off-site sync location for family multimedia and important data from DS1618+ Most of this is currently overkill for our needs (Plex storage and basic NAS duties), but this storage setup does well to provide a good base for the future. Hope this can add to the conversation, and maybe I’ll be able to catch this week’s show live! Ryan Kerschner ————————————————————————————– Hi Jim, I took the job at Kingsway Christian School. This semester I’ll be teaching 3 classes, starting next week Wednesday. 6th Grade Computer programming 7th and 8th Grade Computer programing 7th and 8th Grade Multimedia For the multimedia class, I’m going to include podcasting. I plan to use Podnews from James Cridland as a resource for this class. I want students to get used to reading and understanding industry news. Do you know of anything similar for computer programming? Also, my programming skills are mostly HTML and CSS so that’s where I plan to start. Are these valuable skills? It doesn’t seem like these use much math or logic. I’m open to any suggestions or resources you would like to share about computer programming. Thanks, Kyle —————————————————————————————————– News TeamViewer cracking down on the free model but it’s detecting false positives and locking people’s accounts if they use them from a corporate domain Reviews Mike – Installed SimpliSafe and have been very impressed so far.
