Recovering An Audacity Crash, 3–2–1 Backup, Windows 7 Control Panel, Malwarebytes Antivirus and CES 2011 Report – HT007
We talked about more than just Audacity crashing (in fact, we never mentioned it on the recorded show) but at the end of the broadcast, Audacity died on us. I thought we had lost the file and had no idea how to recover it. To GOOGLE! We found the recovery instructions and did a live fix right on uStream! Here were the instructions: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=CrashRecovery There were a couple spots that didn’t recover just right. See if you can find them!
Speaking of uStream, we are now LIVE each Thursday night at 7:00pm Central / 8:00pm Eastern. You can join us to listen to the show as we are recording it as well as join the live chat. Find it each week at http://theaverageguy.tv/live/
In this week’s show, we are joined by John Zajdler from the HomeServerShow.com and a regular co-host Christian.
Back Up
We talked about different back up options based around the 3 – 2 – 1 methodology. We covered the functionality of the native Windows 7 back up, Acronis Back up Software, SyncToy 2.1, CrashPlan, ClickFree, Carbonite and KeepVault. Sync Toy also works well when moving large amounts of files from one drive to another.
The Control Panel
We took a look at maybe a long forgotten resource in Windows 7 in the Control Panel. Tons of tools and utilities to keep your PC fit! John mentioned Revo Uninstaller, Christian liked CCleaner and Jim brought the group back to the utilities in the Control Panel. There is Gold here Jerry, GOLD!
AntiVirus
We spent some time address the current state of affairs when it come to antivirus protection. Things are starting to get personal. If you have kids and want to help them be more safe on the internet, you will want to pay attention to this section. Jim likes Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes as a basic one – two punch for protecting your PC! Christian likes Avira.
CES
Jim talks a little bit about this trip to Las Vegas and CES. Lots of updates and photos both here and at the http://homeservershow.com/. Few surprises from the conference in general.
Some bonus material right at the end…so listen all the way to the end!

Good show, guys. Prompted by this podcast, I tested Windows 7 backup and performed a restore from a secondary drive in my computer. That worked well. I also tested restoration from a network location using WHS and that worked well, too.
Thanks Rich! I was kind of surprised myself about how well it works! Thanks for listening!
