The problem is that the buying process has become harder, not easier. A 1kWh power station can look very similar to a 2kWh model on a product page, while the real-world differences in runtime, output, charging speed, weight and expansion can completely change whether it fits your needs.

The capacity number matters, but it is only the beginning. I care just as much about output, solar input, recharge speed, battery chemistry, app quality, UPS behavior, expandability and whether I can comfortably move the unit where I need it.
Capacity: What Does 1,000Wh Actually Mean?
Battery capacity is usually listed in watt-hours. A 1,000Wh battery theoretically contains enough energy to run a 100-watt load for about ten hours.
Real life is less tidy because the inverter, electronics and conversion process consume some energy. Appliances also cycle on and off rather than drawing one perfectly constant load.
I use the simple math as a planning tool, not a promise:
Battery watt-hours ÷ average device watts = rough maximum runtime before losses.
If your refrigerator averages 80 watts over time, a roughly 1kWh unit may keep it running for many hours. If you plug in a 1,500-watt space heater, that same battery can disappear surprisingly fast.
Output: Capacity and Power Are Different
This is one of the most important distinctions for first-time buyers.
Capacity tells you how long the battery can run something. Output tells you whether it can run that thing at all.
A microwave, coffee maker, air fryer, pump or power tool can demand a lot of power even if you only use it briefly. A large battery with a weak inverter may not start the load. A smaller battery with a strong inverter may run it but drain quickly.
For home backup, I prefer enough AC output to cover the largest device I realistically expect to use, plus some headroom for other equipment running at the same time.
Why LiFePO4 Changed the Category
Many current portable power stations use lithium iron phosphate, usually written LiFePO4 or LFP. Compared with older battery chemistries, LFP is attractive because of its cycle life and thermal characteristics.
That matters if you plan to use the battery frequently rather than leave it on a shelf for one emergency every few years.
Current mainstream units from EcoFlow, BLUETTI and Jackery increasingly use LFP across their important home-backup products. For example, EcoFlow lists 4,000 cycles to 80% capacity for the DELTA 3, while Jackery makes similar long-life claims for its Explorer 2000 v2. The exact test methods and real-world lifespan will vary, so I treat those figures as useful manufacturer specifications rather than guarantees.
The 1kWh Class Is a Sweet Spot for Many Homes
After using both the BLUETTI AC180 and the EcoFlow DELTA 3, I think the roughly 1kWh class is one of the most useful places to start.
It is large enough to handle meaningful home-office and appliance loads but still portable enough that moving it around the house is realistic.
The current EcoFlow DELTA 3 is rated at 1,024Wh with 1,800W of AC output. BLUETTI’s AC180 is rated at 1,152Wh with 1,800W of output. On paper they occupy very similar territory. In practice, software, charging behavior, solar integration and day-to-day usability can matter just as much as the capacity difference.

When 2kWh Starts Making More Sense
A 2kWh-class battery gives you more room for refrigerators, freezers, longer office runtimes, cooking appliances and overnight outage coverage.
The tradeoff is obvious: more battery usually means more weight and higher cost.

When You Need a Real Home-Backup System
There is a point where the phrase “portable power station” starts underselling the product.
Large systems such as EcoFlow DELTA Pro-class products can provide multiple kilowatt-hours of battery capacity, high AC output, expansion batteries and connections for more substantial home-backup use. EcoFlow’s current DELTA Pro 3 starts around 4kWh and is designed for 120/240V loads and much larger expansion configurations.
That is a very different purchase from a battery you carry to a campsite.
Before spending that kind of money, I would map the actual loads you intend to support, decide how long you want them to run, and determine whether you want extension cords, an inlet, a transfer switch or a more integrated home-energy setup.
Solar Input Matters More Than the Solar Panel Sticker
A large solar panel does not help if the power station cannot accept all of its output.
When comparing units, I look at:
- maximum solar input wattage;
- supported input voltage range;
- maximum current;
- connector type;
- whether panels can be wired in series or parallel;
- how the unit behaves under changing sun conditions.

UPS and Pass-Through Power: Useful, but Read the Fine Print
Many portable power stations can sit between the wall and your equipment and switch to battery when grid power fails. That makes them interesting for routers, home-office equipment, servers and other electronics.
But I do not automatically treat every portable power station as identical to a dedicated UPS.
I check transfer time, supported load, pass-through behavior, battery-management strategy and what happens when the battery reaches a configured state of charge.
For critical servers or equipment where even a brief interruption matters, a traditional UPS may still be the better tool. For broader runtime and larger household loads, a portable power station can offer far more stored energy.

EcoFlow vs BLUETTI vs Jackery: How I Compare the Brands
I do not think there is one permanent winner across every size and price point.
EcoFlow
EcoFlow is the brand I currently favor in the 1kWh class because of my real-world experience with the DELTA 3. Fast charging, solar integration, the app and overall usability have worked well in my setup.
That does not mean every EcoFlow model automatically wins. It means the DELTA 3 has earned my confidence through use.
BLUETTI

Do You Need Solar?
No. A portable power station can be extremely useful even if you never connect a solar panel.
If your goal is riding through a short outage, you may simply keep the unit charged from the wall and recharge it after grid power returns.
Solar becomes more important when outages last longer, you are camping or living off-grid, or you want to cycle some household loads using renewable energy.
I think of solar as a way to refill the battery without the grid, not as a requirement for owning the battery.
What About Running a Refrigerator?
Refrigerators are one of the most common reasons people shop for portable backup power.
The challenge is that refrigerators have compressors. Their instantaneous startup demand can be higher than their normal running wattage, and actual energy use varies with room temperature, compressor cycles, size and efficiency.
I would measure the refrigerator if possible rather than rely on a generic internet number. Then choose a power station with enough inverter headroom to handle startup and enough battery capacity for the runtime you want.
Can a Portable Power Station Run a Home Office?
Absolutely, and that is one of my favorite uses.
A modem, router, switches, laptops, monitors and a few desktop systems can add up, but the load is often much easier to support than electric heating or cooking.

Do Not Buy More Battery Than You Can Move

I treat weight, handles and wheels as real specifications. A smaller battery that can actually be deployed quickly may be more useful than a larger one that effectively becomes permanent furniture.

Is 1,000Wh enough for home backup?
