2012 State Farm 10 Mile and 5K: 20 Miles of Training and Results

March 31, 2012 – For the second year in a row I have used the State Farm 10 mile as a 20 mile training run in preparation for the Lincoln Marathon.  The last two years have been terrible weather.  It rained two years ago (2010) and snowed last year (2011).  This year, the weather couldn’t have been much better.  We are off to an early spring here in Nebraska and the morning temps were in the 50s this morning with overcast skies.  It was wonderful.

I have been training with Dave Cihal now for the last 6 months.  He is an incredible training partner and has kept me on track for the Lincoln Marathon.  Both of us have the goal of a sub 4 hour finish.  My best marathon time to date is [4:19] at the Omaha Marathon.  Dave has not only run a bunch of miles with me, he has done a great job of keeping my training program on track despite a very busy spring.  I have seen some incredible results in my total distance this year with his help. Thanks Dave!

We made the early carpool connection at Cabela’s at 6:00am and may our way down to the State Farm location in Lincoln for a 7:00am start to a very long day.  It took us a bit longer to get there than I had planned (thanks to me no less) and got started on the trail at about [7:20].  The sun was just coming up, the temps were cool but not cold and we were in for a great day!

The first 10 were easy and slow.  We both want to just get in the miles.  The second 10 were much faster and I think running around people helped.

The temps were up for the second half of the race.  I drank a bunch of fluids and recovered with a couple bottles of chocolate milk!  Yum!
