Windows Know IT Guyde: Upgrade, Repair, Replace or Keep What You Have
I’ve been writing and talking about Windows on The Average Guy for a long time. Years ago, I built separate Know IT Guydes for Windows 8 and Windows 10. The idea was pretty simple: put useful information in one place and keep updating it as Windows changed.
The keeping-it-updated part didn’t exactly go according to plan.
So I’m doing things differently this time.
Instead of creating another Guyde tied permanently to one version of Windows, this is the Windows Know IT Guyde. Windows versions will change. Hardware will change. Microsoft’s requirements will change. But the questions most people are trying to answer are remarkably consistent:
Should I keep the Windows PC I already have, upgrade it, repair it, or replace it?
That’s what this Guyde is designed to help you figure out.
And I’ll start with something that can get lost whenever we’re talking about new technology:
If the computer you already own does everything you need it to do, I’m not going to try to convince you to buy another one.
On the other hand, if you’re hanging onto an old Windows 10 machine that isn’t receiving normal security updates, can’t officially run Windows 11, is running out of storage and struggles with the things you use it for every day, putting more money into it may not make much sense either.
Somewhere between those two situations is the right answer for most people.
Start Here: Keep, Upgrade, Repair or Replace?

The important part is that newer isn’t automatically better for you.
A four-year-old computer that handles everything you ask of it may be a much better computer than a brand-new machine you didn’t need.
What Version of Windows Am I Running?
Before making any decisions, find out exactly what you’re running.
Press Windows key + R, type winver and press Enter.
You can also go to Settings → System → About.
That will tell you which Windows edition and version you’re using.
As of September 2026, Windows 11 Home and Pro have several supported releases in the market, including versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H1. Version 24H2 reaches the end of updates for Home and Pro on October 13, 2026, while 25H2 and 26H1 have longer support windows. You don’t need to memorize Microsoft’s servicing calendar, but you do need to know whether the version you’re running is still supported.

Can My PC Run Windows 11?
For many Windows 10 users, this is the first important question.
Microsoft’s basic Windows 11 hardware requirements include:

Microsoft’s PC Health Check application is a good starting point for checking whether an existing computer officially qualifies.
One thing worth checking before declaring a computer incompatible: TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot may be available on the computer but disabled in its firmware settings.
That doesn’t mean every older PC can be made Windows 11 compatible. Processor support and other requirements still matter. But it’s worth understanding why the computer failed the compatibility check before replacing it.

Microsoft’s Minimum Is Not My Buying Recommendation
There’s an important distinction between what Windows 11 can technically run on and what I would buy today.
Microsoft says Windows 11 can run with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
I would not recommend buying a typical general-purpose Windows PC with those specifications in 2026.
For most people buying a new general-purpose computer, I consider 16 GB RAM + 512 GB SSD a much more practical starting point.
If you’re doing heavier multitasking, content creation, development, virtual machines or other demanding work, 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage can be a much better long-term target.
Those aren’t Microsoft’s Windows requirements. They’re my practical recommendations based on how people actually use computers.
When someone asks me, “What’s the best computer?” my first question isn’t usually about Intel versus AMD or which brand they should buy.
It’s: What are you going to do with it?
I’m Still Running Windows 10. Now What?
Windows 10 reached the end of normal support on October 14, 2025.
That doesn’t mean every Windows 10 computer suddenly stopped working the next morning. It means Microsoft’s normal security and feature-update lifecycle ended.
If you’re still running Windows 10, I see three reasonable paths.
1. Upgrade to Windows 11
If your computer officially supports Windows 11 and the hardware still meets your needs, this is usually the simplest path.
You may get several more useful years out of hardware you already own.
2. Use Extended Security Updates Temporarily
Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates program can provide critical and important Windows 10 security updates through October 12, 2027 for eligible Windows 10 22H2 systems.
ESU is a bridge.
It isn’t Windows 10 getting a new life indefinitely. It doesn’t provide normal feature development, product enhancements or technical support.
But if the computer still works well and you need more time before replacing it, that additional security-update window can be valuable.

3. Replace the Computer
If the machine can’t officially run Windows 11 and is already slow, unreliable, difficult to upgrade or several generations behind what you need, replacement becomes much easier to justify.
That’s especially true if you’re about to spend significant money repairing or upgrading it.
Should I Upgrade This PC or Replace It?
Keep It
Keep the computer if it’s running a supported version of Windows, performance is good enough, storage isn’t constantly full, the hardware is reliable and it does what you need.
You don’t need a more complicated reason.
Upgrade It
Upgrade the computer if one identifiable limitation is holding back an otherwise useful machine.
Common examples include not enough RAM, a slow or undersized storage drive, insufficient local storage or a poor desktop workspace.
A relatively inexpensive upgrade can sometimes add years to the useful life of a computer.
Repair It
A failed fan, battery, drive or Windows installation doesn’t automatically mean the computer needs replacing.
The better question is: What will I have after the repair?
Spending $150 repairing an otherwise capable computer that could serve you for another three years can make sense.
Spending $500 repairing a ten-year-old machine that still can’t run a supported version of Windows may not.
Replace It
Replacement becomes increasingly reasonable when several things are wrong at once: unsupported operating system, processor too old for Windows 11, limited RAM, slow storage, failing hardware, poor battery life, insufficient ports, limited upgradeability and performance that no longer meets your needs.
At some point, you’re no longer improving the machine.
You’re investing in its past.
My Simple Windows PC Decision Tree
1. Does the computer still do everything I need?
Yes → Keep it.
No → Continue.
2. Is it running a supported version of Windows?
Yes → Identify what’s limiting you.
No → Determine whether it officially supports Windows 11.
3. Can one reasonable hardware upgrade solve the problem?
Yes → Compare the cost of the upgrade with the useful life you’re likely to gain.
No → Continue.
4. Does the computer otherwise have several years of useful hardware life remaining?
Yes → Repair or upgrade may still make sense.
No → Start comparing replacement computers.
And before doing any major upgrade, repair, reset or replacement: Back up your data.
Upgrade Instead of Replace
Replacing a computer isn’t always the answer.
If the processor is still adequate and the machine is otherwise reliable, fixing the actual bottleneck can be considerably less expensive.
Upgrade to an SSD
If an older computer is still booting from a mechanical hard drive, replacing that drive with an SSD can be one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make.
Startup, application loading, file access and general responsiveness can all improve substantially.
But don’t order a drive until you know what the computer supports.
You may encounter 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, M.2 SATA drives, NVMe drives, different PCIe generations and different physical M.2 sizes.
For a general-purpose computer, 512 GB is a reasonable starting point, while 1 TB often provides much more comfortable long-term capacity.
If an SSD upgrade makes sense for your computer, you can compare current 2.5-inch SATA SSDs on Amazon or NVMe SSDs on Amazon. Check compatibility before ordering.

Add More RAM
Memory upgrades can also make a major difference if RAM is actually the bottleneck.
Moving from 8 GB to 16 GB can still be useful for many systems.
Moving from 16 GB to 32 GB is more workload-dependent. Heavy multitasking, virtual machines, content creation and development can benefit considerably more than basic web browsing and email.
Before buying memory, check DDR generation, supported speed, maximum capacity, available memory slots, current module configuration and whether the RAM is soldered to the motherboard.
Once you know exactly what the computer supports, you can compare current PC memory kits on Amazon.
Compatibility matters more than buying the fastest-looking kit on the page.
Improve the Workspace Instead
Sometimes the computer isn’t really the problem.
A better monitor, keyboard, mouse or docking setup can dramatically improve a computer you already like.
A good computer monitor or USB-C dock can sometimes improve the everyday experience more than replacing a computer that’s already fast enough.
Always ask: What problem am I solving?
Before You Upgrade, Repair or Replace: Back Up the Computer
Do this before opening the computer, replacing the drive, resetting Windows or migrating to another machine.
Think beyond Documents.
- Documents
- Photos
- Videos
- Desktop
- Downloads
- browser bookmarks
- password-manager access
- locally stored email
- financial and tax data
- application-specific data
- software licenses
- Microsoft account credentials
- BitLocker recovery keys
- anything stored somewhere unusual
Then verify the backup.
Seeing files copy isn’t the same thing as proving you can get them back.
I’ve been talking about the 3-2-1 approach to backup on The Average Guy for years. Some of the specific services mentioned in that older article have changed, but the underlying principle remains useful: important data shouldn’t depend on one device or one copy.
For local backup storage, external hard drives generally provide more capacity for the money, while external SSDs are smaller, faster and easier to carry.
For important data, one external drive shouldn’t necessarily be your entire backup strategy.
Buying a Replacement Windows PC
If replacement is the right answer, don’t start with a brand.
Start with the workload.
Basic Home Use
Web browsing, email, streaming, documents, video calls and light photo management don’t require an extreme computer.
I’d generally start around 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, a current mainstream processor, a good display and enough ports for your actual needs.
General Productivity
For heavier browser use, Office applications, multitasking, large photo libraries and a computer you expect to keep for several years, consider 16–32 GB RAM, 512 GB–1 TB SSD, a stronger mainstream processor, a good display and appropriate USB/USB-C connectivity.
Creator, Developer, Gamer or Power User
This is where generic recommendations become less useful.
Your workload may depend heavily on CPU performance, GPU performance, RAM capacity, storage speed and capacity, cooling, display quality, power requirements, ports and upgradeability.
Buy for the applications you actually use.
Shopping for a Replacement?
For a broad look at what’s currently available, compare Windows 11 laptops, mini PCs or desktop PCs on Amazon.
Those are starting points, not endorsements of every computer in the results.
Laptop or Desktop?
A laptop gives you portability and combines the computer, display, keyboard, trackpad and battery into one device.
Add a dock and external display and it can also become a very capable desktop workstation.
The tradeoff is usually less internal upgradeability and repairability.
A traditional desktop generally offers easier upgrades, more storage options, better cooling, replaceable components, more ports and potentially more performance for the money.
Mini PCs sit somewhere in between.
They’re small and power-efficient, and some are surprisingly capable, but upgradeability varies significantly.
Don’t buy the form factor first. Buy the machine that fits the job.
Windows 11 Home or Pro?
For most home users, Windows 11 Home is enough.
Windows 11 Pro becomes more interesting when you specifically need its additional business, management, virtualization, remote-access or security capabilities.
Don’t pay extra for Pro simply because the word “Pro” sounds better.
If you don’t know why you need Pro, there’s a pretty good chance you don’t.
Do I Need a Copilot+ PC?
Copilot+ PCs are a newer class of Windows computers built around processors that include sufficiently powerful neural processing units for Microsoft’s on-device AI features.
Microsoft’s current baseline includes an NPU capable of 40+ TOPS, 16 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage.

If you’re already buying a new computer and expect to keep it for several years, Copilot+ capability is worth considering.
But I would not replace a perfectly good computer just because it isn’t a Copilot+ PC.
AI capabilities are changing quickly, and the applications that matter to you should drive the decision.
My approach is simple:
Buy the computer first. Buy the AI label second.

These are starting points, not absolute requirements.
One More Thought Before You Buy
A computer doesn’t exist by itself.
Your storage, backup, display, network, power protection and peripherals all contribute to the experience.
Sometimes spending $200 improving the environment around a good computer is smarter than spending $1,500 replacing it.
Setting Up a New Windows PC
Run Windows Update
Let Windows install its current security, feature and driver updates.
A new computer may spend considerable time updating, indexing files and syncing cloud data. Don’t judge first-hour performance or battery life too quickly.
Check Manufacturer Updates
Check the computer manufacturer’s support or update utility for relevant firmware and driver updates.
Avoid random third-party driver-download websites.
Secure Your Accounts and Recovery Information
Make sure you know your Microsoft account credentials, where your BitLocker recovery key is stored, how the computer is being backed up and what recovery options are available.
Install What You Actually Use
A new computer is a great opportunity not to reinstall years of accumulated software you no longer need.
Start with what you actually use. Add the rest when you discover you need it.
Configure Backup Immediately
Don’t wait until you’ve spent six months creating data on the new computer.
Backup is part of setup.
Troubleshoot Before You Replace
Is the Drive Almost Full?
Go to Settings → System → Storage.
A nearly full system drive can cause all kinds of problems.
Are You Running Out of RAM?
Open Task Manager and look at memory usage during your normal workload.
If 8 GB is constantly full while you’re using the applications you actually need, more memory may help—assuming the computer can be upgraded.
Is the Storage Drive Failing?
Unusual errors, corrupted files, disappearing drives or extremely poor storage performance deserve attention.
Protect the data first. Diagnose the drive second.
Is Windows the Problem?
Windows recovery and reset options can sometimes restore an otherwise healthy computer.
Again: back up first.
Is the Computer Overheating?
Dust, blocked vents and failing fans can make an otherwise capable computer slow and unstable.
Sometimes maintenance is the upgrade.
Know When to Stop
Troubleshooting has a cost too.
Your time has value.
Spending an entire weekend keeping a ten-year-old unsupported computer alive may be technically satisfying, but it isn’t necessarily the best decision.
Windows Hardware That Can Actually Improve the Experience
SSD
Useful when storage performance or capacity is the bottleneck. Compare SATA SSDs or NVMe SSDs after checking compatibility.
External Backup Drive
Useful for local backups and additional storage. Compare external hard drives or external SSDs.
Monitor
Useful when screen size, resolution or workspace is limiting productivity. Compare current computer monitors.
Dock
Useful when a laptop becomes your primary desktop computer. Compare USB-C laptop docks.
Keyboard and Mouse
Worth replacing when ergonomics or everyday usability are the actual problem.
I’m intentionally not turning every accessory mentioned in this Guyde into an affiliate link.
Webcam, Microphone or Headset
Useful if video calls, podcasting or remote work are important parts of how you use the computer.
Again, buy these because they solve a problem—not because they’re on a checklist.
UPS and Backup Power
For a typical desktop PC and networking setup where you mainly need enough runtime to survive a short outage or shut down cleanly, a conventional UPS battery backup may be the simplest choice.
If you’re thinking beyond a traditional UPS and want enough battery capacity to keep a home office, network or other equipment running during longer outages, I’ve also spent considerable time using larger battery systems.

Windows FAQ
Can I still use Windows 10?
Yes, Windows 10 computers still run, but normal Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. Eligible consumer systems can use Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates program as a temporary bridge through October 12, 2027 while you plan an upgrade or replacement.
How do I know if my PC can run Windows 11?
Start with Microsoft’s PC Health Check application. It checks the major Windows 11 requirements and can help identify why a computer isn’t eligible.
Does Windows 11 require TPM 2.0?
Microsoft’s official Windows 11 system requirements include TPM 2.0. Some computers have compatible TPM hardware that is disabled in firmware, so check the machine before assuming it can’t run Windows 11.
Is 8 GB of RAM enough for Windows 11?
Windows 11 can run with 8 GB, and that may be adequate for lighter workloads. For a new general-purpose PC in 2026, I prefer 16 GB as the practical starting point.
Is 16 GB of RAM enough for a new Windows PC?
For most general home and productivity users, yes. Heavier multitasking, virtual machines, content creation and development can make 32 GB or more worthwhile.
Should I upgrade my old PC or buy a new one?
If one affordable upgrade fixes the primary limitation and the computer otherwise has several useful years remaining, upgrading can make sense. If you’re dealing with unsupported Windows, old hardware, multiple limitations and reliability problems simultaneously, replacement becomes more attractive.
Is Windows 11 Pro worth it over Home?
For most home users, Windows 11 Home is sufficient. Buy Pro when you know you need one of its additional business, management, virtualization, remote-access or security capabilities.
Do I need a Copilot+ PC?
No. Copilot+ capabilities are worth considering when you’re already buying a new Windows PC, but they’re not by themselves a good reason to replace an otherwise capable computer.
Is replacing a hard drive with an SSD worth it?
Often, yes. Moving an older computer from a mechanical system drive to an SSD can dramatically improve responsiveness, provided the rest of the hardware still meets your needs.
What should I back up before upgrading or replacing a PC?
Back up personal files, photos, Desktop and Downloads content, application-specific data, locally stored email, browser and password access, important credentials, software-license information and recovery keys. Then verify that you can actually access the backup before making major changes.

Accuracy: Are Microsoft’s supported versions, lifecycle dates and hardware requirements still correct?
Usefulness: Are readers finding the answers they’re looking for?
Commerce: Are the product paths helping readers make useful buying decisions, and are those paths generating clicks and revenue?
Maintenance: Are internal links, external sources and commercial destinations still working?
The goal isn’t to rewrite this page every three months.
The goal is to keep it trustworthy.
