Christian’s Corner
Christian decided to cover enterprise matter this week. We talked Oracle v Google, Facebook helps out Bing, Microsoft returns to it’s excluding roots and of course a deal of the week.
Gordon covers the NEST Thermostat, Walmart using Vudu to convert DVD’s to Digital and the Microsoft Touch Mouse.
Jim takes a look at the real sales numbers for both Windows and Apple.
Microsoft:
1. At its peak in 2006, Windows XP was sold and operated on about 400 Million PC’s worldwide (legally). They roughly sold about 10 million copies a month while it was available.
2. Windows Vista sold 384 million copied before it was discontinued in October 2009. Also 10 million a month
3. Since its introduction in 2009, Window 7 has sold 525 million copies as of January 2012. It’s currently selling about 20 million copies a month. This puts it on track to sell around 200 million more copies (700 million total) before Windows 8 debuts late this fall. Early indications are that Windows 8 will get off to a slower start with it containing a major UI change in the Metro interface.
Apple:
1. As of February 2012, Apple has sold a total 122 million Macs since they were introduced in 1984
2. Compare that to 80 million iPod Touchs (in 4 years) 180 million iPhones (in 4 years) and 55 million iPads (in 2 years)
3. The 37.4 Million iOS devices (iPhone and iPads) that were sold in the fiscal Q1 of 2012 was more units per day than the number of babies being born globally each day
4. In Q2 2012, Apple sold 35.1 million iPhones and 11.8 million iPads.

#47 The Home Tech Podcast: Skype, iPhone vs Android, Drobo Server, Android ROM’s and Photo Imaging Software
about 7 months ago - No comments
Jim and Andrew and Christian are joined by Mike Howard from Jpeg2RAW for this week’s installment of the Home Tech Podcast.
The guys start off with some Skype chat, relating to the aggressive update cycle since Microsoft acquired Skype, and draw some comparisons to the Group Chat feature within Google Plus, as well as talking about the Facebook and Skype integration.

Jim tells us that his wife is buying a new iPhone 4S, and the merits of iPhone vs Android vs Blackberry devices, and discuss the recent Blackberry Outage, and if the advancements in iPhone and Android could be the writing on the wall for Blackberry.
Jim talks about his new server wish list – a small form-factor PC to connect to a Drobo – check out the discussion over in our Facebook group.
Christians’ Deal-of-the-Week is the AMD AM3+ 8 core CPU from NewEgg, being the first 8-core CPU to the consumer market; ranging from 3.1 GHz through to 3.6 GHz, a very cost effective processor, with fantastic bang for buck!
Christians’ Speed Tip of the Week is the news of Adobe Flash Player 11 which includes native 64-bit browsing, enhanced H.264/AVC playback and GPU Acceleration.
The guys discuss some more Netflix news, relating to plans for Quikster being dropped, and the release of the .XXX domain name suffix – for the more scandalous of the Webmasters amongst us.
Andrew talks about installing a new ROM onto his Android phone, in this case an HTC Desire, to gain more space, and better performance from the phone.
The ROM Andrew installed is SGBS (Stock GingerBread Sense), which is specific to the HTC Desire, however there are also aftermarket ROMs such as Cyanogenmod which cater for most handsets on the market.
If you’re running an Android phone, and looking for a different ROM, it may be something worth looking at – be cautioned, this may damage your phone, so make sure that you research and perform any ROM update at your own risk.
Whilst talking about Android, Andrew brings some late breaking news, being the Android Operating System being ported to the HP TouchPad, again by the Cyanogenmod team. Check it out over at the Cyanogenmod blog.
Mike tells us about a new feature that Adobe is working on for future releases of their Photoshop product range, being an unblur feature. For those moments when the camera moves as you take the shot. The guys talk about the immersion of the Photoshop products in the consumer market, as well as alternatives including The Gimp, Paint.NET.
The guys discuss their retention theories around digital media, be it disposable, or having an extended shelf life. Images are something that most of the guys would not want to lose, however an album of music is something that most of the guys wouldn’t want to lose. Andrew see images as being a memory triggers, and Mike and Christian see images as being priceless, whereas Jim is not as concerned about potential loss of images. The guys discuss the changes over the years with the migration from 35mm to digital photography.
Mike talks about the changes covered by Engadget that Microsoft are going to bring to the Metro UI, that people love or hate in the Windows 8 Developer Preview.
The guys end the show with a little more talk about Google+, and the news that Duke Nukem is coming to the Android platform.

Jay Moore, John Stutsman, and Mike Howard of jpeg2RAW fame join the show this week. Topics include uses for VM servers in the home, pop screens and swivel mounts for microphones, Apple v. MS, and the good ol’ Ford Pinto.
A majority of people own computers that run on the Intel platform. Mike’s entire household runs on AMD because he like’s the bang for the buck. Plus he likes to root for the underdog which is why he sides with Microsoft. Wait…what??
Have you seen those recent Windows commercials on television? One or two might be passable, might be, but on the whole they are squirm-inducing and weak. Microsoft’s approach seems so out of touch. It’s a simple fact that Apple crushes MS when it comes to consumer marketing. The top-down approach always worked for them because Steve Job’s was a one-of-a kind individual who could envision the future. But Microsoft’s top-down approach doesn’t work, and never has. Folks like to lay the blame at Steve Ballmer’s feet. Is it time for him to go? Or is it simply time for a new approach?
Rich has a spare PC now that he’s gone The Full Fo-Shay* and purchased the parts to build his new i7-2600k system. He’s now exploring ways he might make use of his cast-off Q9550 system by setting it up as a VM server. Jay, John, Mike discuss various
scenarios including Mike’s Super Router which you can read about over on the the Home Server Show forums. Mike has combined the best of pfSense + untangle running on XenServer to create a front end that protects and monitors his home network. This goes way beyond your typical store-bought router.
Congratulations to Jay Moore on passing the VMWare Certified Professional test. Jay is now the official go-to guy for all that is VMWare. Right?
There’s a discussion about notorious corporate decisions of the past, notably one that affected the safety of the Ford Pinto.
John, it turns out, is a serious electronics geek who way back in the day would diagnose and repair a car radio rather than shell over big bucks to a dealer for a replacement. He’d figure out that a transistor was bad and he’d just picked up a new one and and replace it.
The guys graciously explain SG-1 and Cylons to Rich, the last person on this good Earth to hear about this stuff.
*The Full Fo-Shay is a term first coined by Rich O’Neil on RRPG #6. It refers one spending a good chunk of change to purchase a premium product. It can also refer to when one purchases a few similar premium products in order to check them out. The idea for the term was inspired by Mike Faucher whose BYOB podcast usually fires up their listeners to spend vast sums of money on new hardware which no one ever really seems to mind doing.
In the show this week: Jim Collison, Rich O’Neil, Mike Howard, John Stutsman, Jay Moore

Does Your HP WebOS TouchPad Need a Turbo Boost? Feeling Like It’s a Little Slow?
about 8 months ago - No comments
Of all the strange places, I found this thread over at the Home Server Show forums. Erik Chavez (texasPl in the HSS Forums) posted some feedback on his overclocking experience with his new TouchPad as well as a great deal on a cover from a source that might surprise you.
Disclaimer: Overclocking your HP Tablet could result in a bricked unit and is at your own risk. The Average Guy accepts no responsibility for the content or results of the following. If it works however, we get all the credit!
Here is what Eric had to say.
Here’s the forum thread he followed to overclock:
http://www.webosbuzz.com/hp-touchpad/694-how-overclock-hp-touchpad-1-5ghz.html
Overall I found WebOS to be fun to use and I agree with your write up on the browser, it is one of the best I’ve ever used. The problem I noticed was that scrolling was not as smooth as say the iPad 2 (which I also own). So once you install Preware you can look through the items there for various tweaks to browser, system etc. One of my favorites has been a tweak to allow video to continue when you card the video player so that you can move to another application and then return without interrupting your video. Preware is like Cydia for iOS in that it has feeds and packages.
Once Preware and Govnah are installed, you should see the first two icons circled below (Preware and Govnah). Depending on what you install from Preware, you’ll also see an icon for your kernel (in my case F15C Eagle) and for Tweaks which has a number of tweaks to better the user experience like the scrolling issue I mentioned before. This is not an exhaustive installation guide, but will give you the basics.
When you open up Preware it’ll update all the feeds and packages to ensure you have the latest ones.
After that, you’ll see the screen below.
If you click on "Available Packages" you’ll get the following screen that breaks them down into categories.
I am using a dark theme for Preware so don’t be alarmed if your background does not look exactly the same. The default is a white background. You can change it later if you wish in the Preware preferences as shown in the following two screen shots.
The following screen is an example of the patches and tweaks I have installed.
Finally, I just noticed today that there has been an update to the overclocking kernel I am using that allows you to boost it to 1.9ghz (I have not yet tried it).
I’m not sure this is related or not as I did not use the Touchpad long enough before overclocking but my battery life has not been too good. I’ve grown accustomed to the longevity of the iPad but with the Touchpad, it pretty much runs down in a day while in standby. I think the WiFi does not sleep as I get email notifications even while it’s in a sleep state. I don’t think it is the overclock because it just overclocks on demand. When I check Govnah it shows it at about 433mhz on the home screen and it jumps up to the full 1.7ghz when apps are loaded etc. Like I said, I’m not sure it is related but I thought it important to point out.
I also wanted to add that for those looking for an inexpensive case, I have found the Griffin Elan Folio for the iPad 1 to be an excellent fit. All ports and controls are fully accessible. Almost as it were made for the Touchpad. Verizon Wireless has then for $9.99 or if you have an employer discount like I do, it came out to $7.48 or 25% off. I ordered this before Office Depot dropped the price of the official HP case to $19.99. I may have sprung for that instead but the reviews on its quality make me wonder whether it is worth it. The only reason I might spring for it is because of it is supposed to work with the Touchstone charging dock, I’m not sure if the Griffin would work.
Here’s a link of to the Griffin: LinkClick to enlarge any image:
Special Thanks to Erik Chavez for this incredible write up.
What have been your experiences with the TouchPad? Got one coming yet?

From The Average Guy Network, home of the ‘Home Tech Podcast’ and other fine podcasts, a new show hosted by Jim Collison and Rich O’Neil. Along with guests, they explore the world of technology in an open format. Anything goes, hence the name of the podcast. Using Google+ Hangout to host the podcasts, guys and gals talk about whatever’s hot or not, current or historic, or anything else on their minds.
This week, Rich and Jim are joined by Mike Howard and the Zajdler twins, John and Joseph, who sound so much alike that you cannot tell the difference between the two at times. Give a listen and see what we mean.
Rich gets things rolling by tossing out a couple of problems he’s run into with Windows Home Server 2011. Joseph Zajdler lends his network experience and expertise to the topics of domain name resolution, DNS cache on the router, HOSTS files, and certificates. Mike Howard talks about using DNS forwarding on his pfSense router to deal with name resolution problems. While realizing that we have our little tricks – reboot the router, release and renew the domain, rerun various setup wizards – to get around these problems, the big question remains: why does this stuff happen in the first place?
Chris Lux joins mid-show to talk about his Kindle. He runs down the features, and explains the physics and physiology behind the reason why E Ink is easier on the eyes than active screen technology used by tablets. He is a doctor, after all, so we’ll take his word for it. Joseph Z. talks about his eBook reader, the Kobo. We also cover eBooks themselves, and the idea of renting an eTextbook vs. buying ‘dead tree’.

#20 The Home Tech Podcast: About.Me, Secure Online Storage, Amazon Cloud Player, Microsoft Patch Tuesday and Google Latitude now has history!
about 1 year ago - No comments
Jim and Christian are joined by John Zajdler and Bill Paulmenn for this weeks edition of the Home Tech Podcast.
The guys kick off with Jim talking about the new online profile site About.Me, a recently discovered online service, which will not only allow you to have a single online bio that you can reference from all your various places on the web, but bring together all your social networking details together, with support for most of the popular sites, including and by no means limited to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, flickr, foursquare, most of the commonly used blogging platforms, and custom services you can add via URL or RSS. For the those of us interested in statistics, About.Me also provides some numbers about where your profile is being viewed from, and what they look at on your profile.

From the news, the guys discuss the new secure online storage service, LiveKive, from the folks we all know at AVG who have brought us the well known, free AVG AntiVirus.
While talking online storage, the guys also discuss the new Amazon Cloud Drive and Cloud Player service which takes your MP3 purchases from Amazon into the Amazon Cloud, allowing you to play your music purchases via the Web, or using Amazon MP3 for Android.
For the Deal of the Week, the folks from NewEgg.com have the Motorola T505 Bluetooth In-Car handsfree for $55. This unit also lets you transmit via Bluetooth to your cars’ FM radio for those of you with a car that doesn’t have a line-in for your MP3 player of choice.
From Christian’s Corner, Christian breaks the news on the upcoming Patch Tuesday, when Microsoft will be releasing their largest ever release, totalling up to 64 patches for those of us who don’t install the “Optional Updates” in Windows. We also hear that Microsoft have released Internet Explorer 9 ahead of the June 2011 date previously advised on the Windows Team Blog. The guys discuss some of their end user and application compatibility experiences with this latest browser release from Microsoft. They also briefly discuss the Ribbon Bar, which is in the teaser images of Windows 8 that have started being seen around the web.
Bill gives us an update on his recent discussions with Embedded Automation regarding Windows Home Server 2011 support for their mControl Home Automation product, and the guys talk about some of the possible future of Home Automation.
To wrap it up, Andrew the latecomer, talks about the new Dashboard features in Google Latitude, which gives some nice statistics about how you spend your time, as well as the bonus of telling you how far you travel!
